I am not making a difference. I am not trying to throw myself a pity party, but I am suddenly all too aware of the lack of an impact I am making.

My school has seen two off campus deaths this year: one stabbing, one shooting. We have not acknowledged these deaths as a school and offered one day of unpublicized grief counseling to students.

On Friday, 15 students tried to beat a boy to death in a classroom at 11 a.m. The teacher, who threw herself to the floor to trying to protect this boy, will not be returning to school. I teach one of the students who assaulted this boy. Her received no punishment aside from a call to his mother. He openly stated to me that he is proud of his actions.

My admin, guided by the mandates of central office, cannot suspend or expel students for this event easily. They have yet to acknowledge this event to the faculty, and we have received most of our information from hall monitors and students.

I have spent most of my time since finding all of this out physically sick or crying. I don’t know to do this and I don’t know how to walk away.
